A one-time commemorative Centennial Medal will recognize the accomplishments of about 8,000 extraordinary Alberta men, women and youth during the province's centennial year.
The medal will pay tribute to Albertans whose achievements have benefited their fellow citizens, their community and their province. Recipients for the medal will be selected based on nominations submitted by representatives from various levels of government and from provincial associations and other organizations. The medals will be awarded at presentations throughout the centennial year.
To ensure that the medal is inclusive and recognizes a diversity of achievements, the criteria are broad. The medal can be awarded to men, women and youth who:
The Alberta Centennial Medal Act designates the medal as an official honour of the Crown in right of Alberta. Once the Act is passed, the Government of Alberta can pursue national status for this award. A medal with national status is included in Canada's Order of Precedence.
The Alberta Centennial Medal is distinct from the Alberta Centennial Medallion. The medal recognizes exemplary personal contributions while the medallion, announced on September 1, 2004, will be presented as a keepsake to Alberta school children, centenarians, officials and visiting dignitaries.
