Centennial Hockey Showdown Between Alberta and Saskatchewan

Alberta and Saskatchewan are facing off in a special centennial hockey game Thursday, April 14, 2005 in the border city of Lloydminster. The event will feature many of the finest major junior hockey players in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as Alberta takes on Saskatchewan in a one game showdown for the Centennial Challenge Cup trophy.

Team Alberta and Team Saskatchewan rosters will be comprised of players who are residents of each province and have been eliminated from the WHL Playoffs. The player rosters will be announced following the conclusion of the first round of the WHL Playoffs. Ron MacLean with CBC Television will emcee and host the Centennial Hockey Challenge.

Premier Klein was unable to attend but sent a video message to Lloydminster for the announcement. Watch the video (WMV, 5MB).

The game will be held at 7:00pm MT at the Lloydminster Civic Centre. All tickets are $10 each and are on sale at the Commonwealth and Lloydminster Credit Union locations. Ticket holders will receive a commemorative t-shirt at the game in support of their provincial team, compliments of the 2005 Alberta and Saskatchewan Centennial Committees. Proceeds from the event will be directed in support of the WHL Education Fund, the Hockey Alberta Foundation and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association Legacy Fund.

To hear the action, tune into CBC, who will carry live play-by-play radio coverage of the game. CBC News: Canada Now will also broadcast live from the Centennial Arena from 6:00-7:00pm to both Alberta and Saskatchewan.
