New Provincial Park Honours Lois Hole

A new provincial park honours the memory of a beloved former Lieutenant Governor by creating a lasting centennial legacy in her name.

The Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park protects an internationally renowned region for the nesting and migrating of waterfowl and shorebirds. The park pays tribute to the late Lieutenant Governor's passion for the environment, education and Alberta's youth. It also acknowledges Albertans' request for centennial legacies that last long after this year is past.

The park is adjacent to the cities of Edmonton and St.Albert and Sturgeon and Parkland counties. It includes the former Big Lake Natural Area, which now will enjoy a higher level of protection and recognition. An additional 302 hectares of undeveloped crown land complete the new park, for a total of 1421 hectares.

Big Lake is a freshwater wetland ecosystem surrounded by small deciduous and coniferous woodlands. The lake is globally recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports large nesting grounds and many migrating waterfowl and shorebirds.

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is the 69th provincial park in Alberta.
