The final image of the “Buffalo Twins” Mural Mosaic celebrating Alberta's and Saskatchewan's joint centennials was revealed April 2nd on the surface of the Ice Palace at West Edmonton Mall.
Since the beginning of March, over 250 visual artists, musicians, world class athletes, politicians and others painted 16x16 inch sections of the 336 piece mural. Each artist used imagery symbolic of Alberta and/or Saskatchewan over the past 100 years as well as representing the artists' personal connection to the provinces. The project is sponsored by CIBC and CBC Radio-Canada.
Panel paintings of everything from Mounties to Saskatoon berries blend together to create an image of two embracing children, the Buffalo Twins of the mural's title. Individual paintings are commissioned -- artists are given cursory guidelines -- then eventually placed side by side to create an image known ahead of time only to the organizers
Now that the mural is assembled, it will tour through various communities across Alberta and Saskatchewan including Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and Regina. The mural will even make a trip to Ottawa to participate in the Alberta Scene festival.
