Centennial Music Project

Writing notes has taken on a whole new meaning for eight Alberta schools recently chosen to participate in a unique Centennial musical project, Alberta Song Writing Intensive.

Inspired by the success of the song chosen last year as Alberta's official song, Alberta, Song Writing Intensive is designed to give students in groups selected from Grades 4-6 the opportunity to experience an in-depth, day and one-half workshop learning to write songs about their school or community.

Mary Kieftenbelt, writer of Alberta's official song, will be joined by either John Wort Hannam or Chris Andrew at each location to lead students on this music writing journey.

Schools that will be participating in the project include:

  • Allan Johnstone School, Hardisty;
  • Daysland School, Daysland;
  • Dene Tha School, Chateh;
  • Evansdale School, Edmonton;
  • Elm Street School, Medicine Hat;
  • Albert Park School, Calgary;
  • River Valley School, Sundre; and
  • École Steffe Woiman, Sylvan Lake.

Wort Hannam and Andrew are outstanding Alberta musicians and songwriters who have extensive experience in schools, giving workshops and performing. Recently Andrew represented Alberta by performing at Alberta Scene in Ottawa, and Wort Hannam was part of the Made in Alberta delegation to Australia in February.
