A Garden Fit for a Queen

In full bloom this summer was a unique tribute to Alberta's centennial and the Queen's Visit to Edmonton.

Cliff Milroy, a Power Engineer/Master Gardener for the Commerce Place building in downtown Edmonton, came up with the idea of a flower bed honouring the province's 100th birthday. With the generous financial support from the building's owners, GWL Realty Advisors Inc., Milroy  created and planted an English cottage garden in front of the building during the May long weekend.

With the help of some horticulturalists, the garden consisted of 27 roses made up from seven different varieties as well as other perennials and annuals. The rose collection also included the aptly named “Queen Elizabeth rose”, which was named after Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, to mark her ascension to the throne in 1952.
