Provincial Archives

The renovated Provincial Archives opened in October 2003. In addition to shelving and environmentally controlled storage vaults, the building includes a reference and reading room, a library, a small conference centre, an exhibit area, a conservation laboratory, processing areas and offices.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta is responsible for preserving and making accessible records of enduring provincial, national and international significance, and is the official repository for records of the Government of Alberta. It is now one of the few archives in Canada that houses its public reading room and all of its holdings in a single location.

Located on 17 acres of land, the spacious facility includes 85 kilometres of shelving in 20 storage vaults located on two floors with specialized environmental controls. The new archives also feature a reference and reading room, library, small conference centre, exhibit area, conservation laboratory, processing areas and staff offices. There is also office space to accommodate the Friends of the Archives and the Archives Society of Alberta.

The new Provincial Archives has ample free parking, good access to bus service and is located within close proximity to the Federal Records Centre on 51st Avenue, as well as, the University of Alberta Book and Record Depository on 50th Street.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta has served Albertans since 1967, when it first opened on 102 Avenue.
