Centennial Time Capsule Debuts at Edmonton Grand Prix

A mammoth steel time capsule that will capture Albertans' memories and mementos was unveiled in Edmonton this weekend. The Alberta Centennial Time Capsule is starting a province-wide tour offering more than 200 communities a chance to help mark Alberta's 100th birthday.

The capsule, almost 6.5 meters (21 feet) long, and 1.8 meters (6 feet) in diameter, went on display Sunday, July 17, at the Grand Prix of Edmonton. The capsule is taking to the road, and will make a stop in Red Deer at Westerner Days. The time capsule will arrive back in Edmonton for the centennial celebrations on September 1.

The capsule will visit 10 towns and cities throughout the summer. In addition, more than 200 communities will receive an Alberta Centennial ‘micro time capsule' measuring 76 centimeters (30 inches) long and 12.7 centimeters (5 inches) in diameter. Communities are invited to lock away historical mementos, photographs, newspaper clippings, items reflecting local culture and other items telling the story of their area.
